Mosque/Cathedral in Córdoba

When visiting Córdoba, we had a very interesting experience. We visited the Mezquita, Cordoba's greatest Mosque, which dates back12 centuries. It embodied the power of Islam in Spain. The original mosque was built between 785 and 787. The building evolved over the centuries, blending many architectural forms. After the Catholics invaded Spain in 1492, most mosques were burned down or destroyed. During the 1500s, a cathedral was built I the heart of the mosque. Today it is the only mosque left of over 300 mosques in the area. The reason it was kept and not destroyed was because it was turned into a cathedral early on.

There is a lovely courtyard of orange trees, where the faithful used to wash before prayer.

The Torre delAlminar is a bell tower that stands 305 feet high. We climbed it and had a beautiful view of the grounds below, as well as Córdoba.

The bells rang very loudly while we were atop the tower.
