Holy Toledo!

As we drove to Toledo, the bus stopped on a hillside, overlooking Toledo. A beautiful and old walled city was awaiting our arrival! Below is a picture of all educators on our tour with Toledo behind us.

It's so much fun to travel with all of these educators!  Also with my Assistant Principal!

Nine of us from Daniel Webster School!

The little city of Toledo has 79 churches and 1 cathedral. I learned that the difference between a church and cathedral is that a cathedral is the bishop's church. Cathedral comes from the name cathedra, which means "the bishop's chair." Each city can only have one cathedral. The expression "holy Toledo" is because Toledo has so many houses, it's holy! This Toledo Cathedral was built on the land of a 7th century church. Work began in 1226 and spanned 3 centuries until its completion in 1493.

So many stained glass windows adorn the interior of the church. Over 300!

The seats for the church choir..each carved to depict scenes from the fall of Granada.

The medevil village is crowded with churches and homes built centuries ago.

Behind the walls of the city lies much evidence of the city's rich history.

In the Middle Ages, Toledo became a melting pot of Christians, Jews and Muslims.

The streets are cobblestone and very, very narrow.

I could spend a few days wandering these streets of Toledo, bringing myself back to a time that is so unfamiliar to us today.
